Description

An encouraging message for children: When you feel like you're the smallest of smalls, Jesus' love can make you feel like the tallest of talls.

A delightful rhyming story about the Too-Smalls who live in the Stiltsville. Every evening a six, the Too-Smalls meet in the square where they hope they'll be picked to receive stilts to strut about above the stilt-less masses below. They come to see if they matter-if they're awesome, if they're pretty, if they're clever, or funny. Ollie, the smallest of too-smalls, pleas to be picked. He wants to be like the high-ups of Stiltsville who are proud of their stilts, the ultimate status. But once he gets stilts, oh how it hurts when he stumbles and tumbles and loses his stilts.  That is . . .  until he meets Jesus who chose low over high telling him, "Keep your feet on the ground. You matter already."

This book for kids coordinates with Max's trade book, Fearless, releasing in September 2009.

5A Great Book for All Ages  Oct 19, 2009 By K. Heberlein
This children's book by Max Lucado tackles the timeless question of, "Do I fit in?" As we wonder whether we are smart enough, tall enough, cool enough, pretty enough, this book explores all the differences that make you question if you are just right. The story follows a little boy about the town as he crosses by characters with different attributes and who is trying to measure up. When he finally does measure up, he discovers that it isn't so great after all. The bottom line being that Jesus loves us and that is what mattered all along!

What a great book for children 3 and up (even a good reminder for adults) to learn the importance of the differences around us. This book comes with high recommendations from me. It is filled with great illustration and a rhyming banter that is easy to read. Most important of all, it comes with a great message to us all, nobody is small or insignificant to Jesus! The illustrations are full of color and detail and lots to look at. The town has whimsical look that goes great with the whimsical banter of the story. This book is very easy to follow and very easy to read and be enjoyed by many!

5Calculating our Worth  Oct 19, 2009 By Roberta Karchner
"So don't be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows." This passage from Matthew 10:31 opens the second chapter of Max Lucado's book, "Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear," called the Villagers of Stiltsville. And as he talks about the fear of not mattering, he tells a parable about a village where all of the important people got stilts and wore them around and looked down at the people without them.

Fear of not mattering, desire to be one of the elite is a fear and desire that drive us as adults - and that also matters to children who are measured and judged by their peers. In The Tallest of Smalls, Max Lucado retells the story, this time starring Ollie, "the boy whose pants have a patch, whose legs are too skinny; his socks never match."

I have enjoyed Lucado's books for children since I first read the story "You Are Special (Max Lucado's Wemmicks)." In each story, he presents the concept of God as a loving God who loves us in spite of our flaws, and reminds us that God is our creator. In this book, Ollie discovers that walking with Jesus makes him taller than walking on stilts.

As I previewed this book, my first thought was of a friend who had recently lost her job and how far she had "fallen" with her job loss. I know this story would encourage her. This book, like the rest of the stories for children that Max Lucado has written is a parable for adults as well.

I recommend it for young kids, older kids, teens, Moms, Dads, and grandparents. It has a little bit in it for each of us.

I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of this book for review directly from Thomas Nelson Publishers as a part of the Book Review Bloggers program.

4Jesus Loves You  Dec 23, 2009 By Alejandra Vernon "artist & illustrator"
Max Lucado's "The Tallest of the Smalls" is about a town where people walk on stilts to feel superior to those beneath them, and how Ollie, who wanted the stilts too, except he was too "common and dull" to receive them. One day he has the experience of walking on the stilts, and then realizes, after falling, how wrong he has been, when Jesus says, "Ollie, come walk with me," and teaches him some simple truths.

This is a story that shows children that they are special in their own way, and should not compare themselves to others, and that God doesn't call the qualified, but qualifies the called, loving us in spite of our failures. Illustrated by Maria Monescillo with expressive figures drawn in sparse, quick lines, this is a colorful picture book that will please kids and their parents alike.

3Nice illustrations...  Dec 11, 2009 By Lynn
"The Tallest of Smalls" has a couple great messages...no matter how unimportant we feel in the world, we are precious to Jesus, and trying to fit in isn't always a good choice. When Little Ollie finally gets his heart's desire and is picked to receive a pair of stilts, he soon realizes that "the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence."

Max Lucado wrote this in Dr. Seuss style, but the rhyming isn't as good. The story doesn't always flow nicely, gets a bit confusing in parts, and could be difficult for a four year old to understand...be prepared to add some of your own explanations. Also, you just might experience a teachable moment when you explain to your youngster what stilts are & how they're used.

By the way, I love Maria Monescillo's illustrations.

This story has a great message which could have been conveyed a bit more clearly.
