| | Description | This easy-to-read book reveals the What, Why and How of the Traditional Latin Mass - which Pope Benedict XVI has now called the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Catholics of all ages will find that the Mass - and the entire Catholic Faith- has been opened up to them for the first time. This amazing work shows the awesome dignity of the traditional Catholic Liturgy and the rich spiritual significance of every element of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Broken up into three parts, The Latin Mass Explained begins with a thorough treatise on Sacrifice. Here is described in clear terms the need for Sacrifice, the Old Testament Sacrifice, the Sacrifice of the Cross, the Sacrifice of the Mass and the Relationship of this Divine Gift. Next Msgr. Mooreman describes all the externals of the Latin Mass; everything from its name, the use of Latin, the vestments, the ceremonies and how to Assist at Mass. Lastly, and most importantly, the Mass is broken down prayer for prayer, and action for action showing the symbolism, history and meaning behind every aspect of the Mass. | |

The Latin Mass E-X-P-L-A-I-N-E-D Feb 23, 2008
By J. Singer Msgr. Moorman's explanation of the Latin Mass in this small book is great. Before even beginning to explain the bits and pieces of the Latin Mass, he explains /what/ the Mass is and that means for us. The book was immensely helpful in better appreciating not only what takes place at Mass, but appreciating the Tridentine liturgy as something that must be preserved. Msgr. Moorman clearly and succinctly explains everything about the Latin Mass-- what it is, why, what is used/why, and what the prayers mean.
For anyone wishing to attend a Latin Mass, I also recommend this book as a practical point; there's a list of when to stand, sit, and kneel during the liturgy--so no worries about feeling lost!

The Latin Mass Explained Feb 07, 2009
By Doug Treadwell
"josangels"
The traditional Latin Mass is growing in popularity, both for those old enough to be nostalgic and for those who are curious about how the Mass used to be celebrated everywhere around the world. Of the latter, many are like myself, who are too young to remember the traditional Latin Mass, but are tired of going to a mass that seems to revolve around the personality of the celebrant, or even worse, where the atmosphere in the church is more appropriate to a nightclub. The Mass is "a commemoration of the Sacrifice of the Cross" (pg. 21), not entertainment, not a party. Msgr. Moorman explains the nature of sacrifice in the 1st part of his book, before teaching what each part of the Mass is for and what it represents. For those who have even a mild interest in the traditional Latin Mass,or for those who already attend the Latin Mass, this book is an excellent introduction to understanding the Mass.

Complements "Sacred Then and Sacred Now" Jul 30, 2008
By Rich Leonardi Msgr. Moorman's useful book will give Catholics and others curious about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, a.k.a., the Traditional Latin Mass, a grasp of the rituals, aesthetics, and, most importantly, theology of the Mass as it was celebrated before Pope Paul VI's liturgical revolution. My only qualification in recommending it comes from the fact that the book was written before that revolution. Therefore, it cannot explain to modern Catholics the differences between the Extraordinary Form and how Mass is typically celebrated now. For that, one can turn to Thomas Woods's Sacred Then and Sacred Now: The Return of the Old Latin Mass, written and released last year in the aftermath of Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict's instruction liberalizing access to the older form of Mass. The books do complement each other, however. Time spent with Msgr. Moorman will provide readers with an overall theology and framework, while time spent with Dr. Woods will show how the Extraordinary Form can be appreciated by modern worshipers.

Straight-Forward and Detailed Sep 13, 2010
By john First published in 1920, this 190-page book by Msgr. Moorman is an excellent study of the Latin Mass. Straight-forward and detailed, Msgr. Moorman covers such topics as the sacrificial nature of the mass, the language, the vestments, and the different parts of the mass. This is good Catholic teaching in general, and I think much of it applies to the current rite, not just to the extraordinary form.
One of the great features of this book is that the origins and reasons for the tradition in the mass are described. Even the name "Mass" - from the Latin 'missio' - to send out, dismissal - has a story behind it. The explanation of the different pieces of the vestments and their colors, the construction of the altar, the different directions which the priest faces during different parts of the mass all show how each element is rooted in Tradition and Holy Writ.
I think the core teaching and one of the pearls of this book is the explanation of what a sacrifice is, its importance in history, and how the Catholic Mass carries that forward.
Written in non-technical language, this book reads quickly, but covers a lot of information. Anyone wanting to know about the meaning and origins of the Latin Mass - not just those who attend - will gain a lot from this book.
