| | Description | This comprehensive history of the Catholic Church includes every major event in the Church’s history from the life of her founder, Jesus Christ, to the present day. This text places the Church in her context throughout history and explains the role that the Church and her leaders have played in the shaping of history for better and worse. Complete with maps, timelines, sidebars, paintings, and photographs, The History of the Church is a critical historical resource for Catholic and non-Catholic historians alike. The Didache Complete Course Series is a series of four high school textbooks, teacher's manuals, student workbooks, and teacher's answer guides published by Midwest Theological Forum. Each title spans one academic year. As of 2009, they were being used in about one-third Catholic high schools. This textbook is published with ecclesiastical approval from the Archdiocese of Chicago, and it has been granted conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church by the USCCB Subcommittee on the Catechism. | |

WOW -- Just WOW!!! Jan 12, 2007

Honestly, this is the single most incredible Church History textbook for High School aged students that I have ever seen in my life. (And my background is in Historical Theology!)
I was first made aware of this series about two months ago, when I learned that a local Catholic High School had chosen to use one of the titles. One of my closest friends, the theology teacher at my son's High School, then ordered the entire series, and plans to implement the first two volumes next year.
As a professional theologian -- and as a professional educator -- I can only sit back and be amazed. This is simply the BEST one-volume Church History that I have ever seen. It is accurate; it is readable; it is accessable; it is engaging. It is brilliantly illustrated and laid out. As someone who examines texts for a living -- it simply blew me away. I will be ordering a copy for my parish library as soon as possible. (One of my parish volunteers -- also a professional Catholic educator -- was equally impressed.) I only wish that a parish edition, suitable for CCD classes (and the limitations under which they labor) could be forthcoming.
The Midwest Theological Forum is to be commended for this text -- and for the entire "The Didache" Series.
Very, very highly recommended!

The best Catholic textbook available Oct 11, 2011

To say "the best" may sound like an exaggeration, but I don't think it is, in this case. I've homeschooled for 12 years, and I've seen a lot of Catholic educational materials in that time... some good, some bad. This excels them all. One of the most difficult things for a Catholic who is homeschooling a high-schooler is finding age appropriate materials that are written in sufficient depth and at a college preparatory level. So many of them are written either in simplistic language, or for the adult learner who has more specific, non-academic needs. This book is a must-have for anyone who is educating highly intelligent teenagers, or for the motivated Catholic adult.

The History of the Church Nov 23, 2011
By John Muenzen Excellent reference book for adult catechesis classes, CCD, prison ministries, etc. It is also a very interesting read for Catholics and non-Catholics.

This book is an excellent choice, and a break from routine bible study. It is my second one in the Didache Series.
Perfect History Book Jan 24, 2011
By Lawrence This is AWESOME! It is EXACTLY everything that I could hope for in a history book of the Church. The editorial staff even had a familiar name, Dr. Scott Hahn. The format is a text book, which makes is readable, enjoyable and retainable. Organized with questions and summaries and detailed table of contents, beautiful photos, illustrations, maps and diagrams, this is easily already one of my favorite books, and I've only just begun reading it! Flipping through it you can tell it is a faithful, orthodox and insightful book created to really teach the reader something. It can be studied, as it is meant to be. If other books in the Didache Series are like this one, I know that I will be investing in those as well. I see that the series even contains a great review by Archbishop Charles Chaput.
