5What's Next for this Emerging Author?  Mar 13, 2006 By E. Bretzke "wannabe author to the gods"
I loved, I hated it, I loved it! It made me think about what on Earth people are here for and why it is important to do the little things we do everyday. My favorite part was the answer to the age old question "What is the meaning of life?" I won't spoil it for the reader but Mr. Basso's answer is profound in its simplicity.

Why did I love the booK? Because it was very honest. Why did I hate the booK? Because it was very honest. After reading the book I was moved to help a soul in dispair. If everyone who read this book did just one little act of kindness to someone just because, Mr. Basso will have made a strong contribution to humanity. I can't wait for the next book!

5Kind and Brave  Jan 19, 2006 By zoomer "goldrocket"
A memoir is a tough book to write. Most of us are not brave enough to write about ourselves. R. Martin takes us along on his journey. It is a wild ride. Life is not smooth fitting, it has rough edges. Our guide explores the corners of his world and finds a compass. Some of us never do find that compass. Some of us never make it out of the darkness. R. Martin has made the journey, found his way and shares his insights.

Bravo !

NO BODY WRITES LIKE THIS NO MORE///R. MARTIN BASSO'S WRITING IS REMINISCENT OF 'THE OLD DAYS'///R. BASSO CAN PAINT AN IMAGE LIKE CAPOTE///WHEN R. BASSO WRITES ABOUT HIS MOM'S DEATH IN CHAPTER FIVE I FELT LIKE I WAS READING AN EARLY CAPOTE BOOK///HE DOES NOT JUST TELL A STORY, HE PAINTS A PICTURE LIKE HEMMINGWAY DID 60 YEARS AGO OR CLANCY DOES TODAY///R. BASSO IS SO VIVID THAT MY BRAIN HURTS WHEN I AM DONE READING ONLY TO GO BACK AND RE-READ IT AGAIN///THE FREE-VERSE PIECES ARE REALLY FUNNY AND HE DOES A FINE ATTEMPT AT GIVING A MIDDLE FINGER TO ESTABLISHMENTS WITHOUD BEING CRASS OR VULGAR///I APPRECIATE HIS FLAVOR ARTISTIC WORD PLAY AND THOUGHT IMAGRY///IS THERE A READER'S CLUB YET ON THIS AUTHOR? IF NOT DOES ANYONE WANT TO START ONE UP?

4Interesting, sad, funny, mysterious, angry and thought inspiring  Feb 05, 2006 By Arlene The Reader "pagemistress"
This is VERY reminiscent of Huster S. Thompson.
As far as an 'autobiography' goes I have read many to date. 'Confessions' is its own style of autobio and doesn't follow conventional writing methods. Yes, there are A LOT of humerous one-liners and antedotes which at some points had me really laughing. There's a lot of those. However, what gets me in Basso's writing is that in spite of his use of humor, his is a very sad life; or at least it was up until he "Took Ownership."
I would have liked to have seen the narration section of this book be a little longer; it's just Seven chapters, at about 130+ pages or so. The remaining part of the book (about 50+ pages) is free verse poems, prose, and short stories about sex, religion, death and prejudice (think Woody Allen meets Clockwork Orange meets Allen Ginsberg) and all of them are emotional and thought inspiring.
The seven autobio chapters are an intense and mysterious rollercoaster of A+++ story-telling, but it's comparatively short length is my only real 'problem' with 'Confessions'...It left me wanting to read and know WAY more than was available, at least in this printing. Maybe it was brief because there will be a sequel, I don't know. I hope so, it's VERY Hunter S. Thompson (think Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas).
I love this writer, but I just couldn't jump onto the "Five-Star-Bandwagon" like all of the other reviewers have. I will admit however that this book is a milestone not just in one man's life, but a milestone in an avid book-reader and book-reviewer's life like mine. Thanks R. Martin Basso. Please write more.

4The King Of 'Zingers'  Apr 01, 2006 By Craig The Accountant "CD"
R. Martin Basso has some real 'zingers' in his book 'The Confessions Of A Jilted Superstar, In His Many Conversations With God.' I'll give you an example: "Like Alice through the looking glass, I am outsider looking in" and "There is no greater feeling of loss than that of being powerless." R. Martin Basso has a bunch, but what is interesting is that the points he makes hit their target dead on, yet his hidden little 'zingers' go almost un-noticed. I think that is a pretty decent example of good writing - to make a point or have an impact without even meaning to. I could have done without some of the poetry but it was a part of the book so I endured. Ha! In the end, I will recommend this book and say with honesty that R. Martin Baso should get this transposed onto the screen as soon as possible.
