| | Description | This book's "uniquely Catholic" approach to parenting combines vigorous relational advice with careful theology and plenty of good humor. (The chapter on family planning is entitled "Is Eight Enough?"). The Popcaks guide parents through each stage of child development from infancy to adolescence, offering age-specific advice on "parenting with grace." They call upon natural law theology to encourage attachment parenting, co-sleeping and extended nursing through infancy, and urge parents of older children to consider home-schooling so that children always understand "that family is the primary relationship." Later chapters address a few Catholic-specific issues, such as stimulating children to pursue Church vocations. (Mar.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. | |

An Attachment Parenting book that happens to be Catholic Mar 13, 2010 I bought this book when I was expecting our first child because I was interested in the spiritual well-being of our child & I wanted to do a good job of raising our child in the faith. What I found in this book was an almost exclusive adherence to the "attachment parenting" philosophy (a la Dr. Sears), presented in a style that made it almost seem spiritually & sacramentally mandatory. In other words, the best spiritual way to raise your child is to follow the principles of attachment parenting (for instance, carry him in a sling everywhere, and carry him generally until he is 3). As a Catholic, there are certain moral absolutes by which we abide (when and how to space out children, for instance), and then there are issues that are up to individual discretion. Attachment parenting and the authors of this book, however, think differently. If you are a fan of attachment parenting & a solid Catholic, this book is probably a good match for you. Otherwise, check out books by Dr. Dobson from Focus on the Family or Dr. Ray Guarendi.

Very strong Jan 27, 2010 Dr. Gregory Popcak is one of my favorite authors. Everything he is written I find excellent, and this book is no exception.
I do not agree with everything in the book and I think he takes "attachment parenting" a bit too far. However, his points are well argued and cogent.
The BEST part of this book for me is the section on why spanking is unnecessary and why Dr. Popcak cannot do it or endorse it. This section of the book is just excellent.
I have found two books to be very helpful in teaching me spank-free / yell-free discipline. They are this one, and 1-2-3 Magic for Christian Parents: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12 I have found both sources inspiring and very helpful.
What worked best for us in this regard was developing a checklist for discipline based on these two books, and posting it up where the adults where frequently see it, and then just really working on following it every time a discipline issue comes up. It works very well.
Dr. Popcak has written books on a number of topics of interest to the married Christian, and all are wonderful. I especially recommend Holy Sex!: A Catholic Guide to Toe-Curling, Mind-Blowing, Infallible Loving
Great Content - Poor Editing Aug 24, 2009 This book is great, but I don't understand why there are so many typos. And I'm not a grammar/spelling freak or anything, but the typos just seem to jump out of every page. Did Our Sunday Visitor even read this thing before publishing? I do highly recommend the book, however.

Great (and I'm not even Catholic!) Jun 26, 2009 I love this book. It's so helpful in how to parent and give of yourself with joy. It makes parenting seem so wonderful! One tough part is that the author seems to think Catholics are unique in what they belive (I guess all of us want to think we're unique). Lots of religions believe the same things (and lots of Catholics don't believe them, in fact I went to pre-marriage classes with my Catholic husbnad and the priest specifically told us never to let our children into our bed). But if you can get over that, I highly recommend it.
A great resource for Catholic parents Apr 08, 2009 This book is a great resource for Catholic parents. Even if you don't buy all of the theories and insights, the author does an excellent job of weaving in Catholic teaching. It's a great place to begin to have a conversation, or even add to your conversation, with your spouse about how to be a good parent.
