| | Description | In this beautifully illustrated book for children, Chico the cat describes the life of his "best friend", Pope Benedict, in this authorised biography of the Pope for young people approved by the Vatican. "Dear Children, here you will find a biography that is different than others because it is told by a cat and it is not every day a cat can consider the Holy Father his friend and sit down to write his life story," the Pope's personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Ganswein, says in the foreword. The Pope is known for his fondness of animals, especially cats, and Joseph and Chico is narrated by Chico, a real cat who took up with the Pope in his native Germany long before he became the Pope. Chico tells the story of the life of "my best friend" from his birth in Germany in 1927, through his days as a young man, priest, bishop and cardinal. With a colorful and sometimes amusing language, the author makes this funny cat tell us about the life of the young Joseph all the way up to his election as Pontiff on April 19, 2005. It recounts the Nazi era in Germany when the Pope was a teenager, calling the war years "one of the most dramatic and shameful times in the history of man". Later when he became Cardinal Ratzinger, Chico recounts how each time when the Cardinal returned to Germany from Rome for a vacation, the cat would run into his house and sit on his lap as he played the piano. The lavish color illustrations throughout make this a wonderful gift book and a cherished keepsake for people of all ages! | |

Very Charming--But Perhaps Too Advanced for Target Audience Jul 09, 2010 I enjoyed "Joseph and Chico," a charming book for children presenting the life of Benedict XVI as told by a cat. The caveat needs to be included I suppose that, while the book is geared towards Catholics, there is little here that would draw off non-Catholics. There are lovely illustrations and, having read "Milestones" which is the Holy Father's autobiography of the early years of his life as well as a number of biographies, I can say "Joseph and Chico" is solid in presenting the often dramatic details of what should have been a quiet and undramatic life (priests with an academic bend from Bavaria generally are not the stuff of biographies but then God has had great use for the Holy Father). I wanted to love this book and ended up liking it. This is a children's book that was not written with children in mind if that makes sense. Younger children will enjoy the pictures and the cat's narrative (which is often a bit heavy handed) but they may not be able to process all the information in the book. Older children will understand the book but might think they are too old for the cat's narration. I found this book very charming--it was a noble attempt to teach children about who the Holy Father is.

Cats - Joseph and Chico Nov 19, 2009 This is an excellent, well-written book for the young and old alike. It is very informative and gives one a different prospective of our beloved Pope. I thoroughly enjoyed it (I am 72 years of age) and would highly recommend it to all.
A Wonderful Story Of How God Has Worked In The Life Of Benedict XVI! Jun 07, 2009 The illustrations are superb! What a nice opportunity to get to know our Pope as he grew from a little boy to the Vicar of Christ! This story is a bit too long for little readers to sit through. It is best suited for second grade or older.

A lovely book - but more a keepsake Feb 21, 2009 We received this book as a baptism gift for the latest addition to the family. As great lovers of Pope Benedict XVI, we were delighted, both that this book had been written and that someone had given it to us.
It is a lovely story, and a wonderful way to help the younger members of the family understand who the Pope is, and why the rest of the family has so much affection for him!
One note of warning, though: the story is a little too long to be bedtime story material. So, this isn't a book that tends to be pulled off the shelf very often.
But, honestly, you will want to have it as a keepsake, even if you won't be reading it every night.

Very Cute Jan 18, 2009 This book was very informative while being entertaining. It gave a great human perspective to the Pope and we can see he is just like one of us.
