| | Description | Scholarly interest in the apocryphal Book of Wisdom has grown over the last fifty years. This book examines the interwoven themes of divine judgment and divine benevolence as they are presented in the text of Wisdom. The full extent and interplay between these themes is only revealed by a literary reading of the whole text. This reading examines the poetic techniques, structures, vocabulary, verbal repetitions, and the questions the author has employed to provide a framework for a theology of justice and mercy. | |

God of Love AND Justice Aug 23, 2009
By Bernadette O. Connor In attempting to solve the problem of equating the attributes of Love and Justice with the Christian Triune God, this book was excellent. It was clear and concise and explained how the Book of Wisdom in the Bible gives us an insight in comprehending the God of tremendous love with justice. The ordinary Christian begins to discover that "God did not make death, nor does He rejoice in the destruction of the living...because an...upright life is immortal", (Wis.1:13). We discover through the Book of Wisdom that God continues to ignore the sins of humanity in the hope that we will amend our ways before Judgement Day,(Ws.11:23). He continually pours out His Divine Mercy upon us as He is the lover of all souls and He desires that we will all be saved. God takes no pleasure in destroying human beings, (Ws.1:13) but He nevertheless and ultimately must judge us, (Ws. 5:17-23 12:26-27 and 9:4), because the created order is founded on moral principles, (Ws. 5:20, 11:20, and 19:6).
Through evil actions, and by ignoring His Divine Mercy which He is pouring out upon us giving us the opportunity to repent of our sins, we can only bring God's justice upon ourselves just as He has promised, (Ps.11). However, as a Christian community in prayer together, both private and public, and in living our lives to the best of our abilities according to the teachings of the Church and the inspired Word of God, (the Bible), then God can only have compassion on all of us because all of us are His, (Ws.11:26). God the lover of life takes no pleasure in destroying human beings. He is a God of Divine Mercy and Divine Love, but He is also a God of Justice who will judge us if we have chosen through our own free will to perform evil actions and ignore His gift of Mercy to help us amend our ways.
I would recommend this book to all Christians particularly those who are interested in learning more about their faith.
