| | Description | Home educator Laura Berquist presents a modern curriculum based on the time-tested philosophy of the classical Trivium: grammar, argument and rhetoric. She has given home schoolers a valuable tool for putting together a liberal arts curriculum that feeds the soul, as well as the intellect. Her approach, covering grades K-12, is detailed and practical, and it is adaptable by parents and teachers to a wide variety of situations. This third revised edition icludes a much expanded section for a high school curriculum, and an expanded and updated list of resources for all grades.Recommended in Laura Berquist Grades K-8, Laura Berquist U.S. History Geography and American LiteratureAuthor: Laura BerquistPages: 225, PaperbackPublisher: Ignatius PressISBN: 0-89870-660-2 | |

What a GEM!!! Jun 06, 2010 I love this book! I must confess that I even came across a second copy of it and cannot part with either. One is my dog-eared and highlighted reference, and the other is my reading copy. There is so much valuable information here that I hate to be without it. It seems I am always referring back to it. It's akin to having your own experienced homeschool mentor right by your side. It is a MUST HAVE reference for any classical or catholic homeschool library. Thank you for such a terrific resource!
Catholic homeschool guide Apr 26, 2010 Laura Behrquist delivers an easy to understand and follow guide to setting up your homeschool curriculum. I am using this with Susan Wise Bauer's book "The Well-Trained Mind". I feel like my children are flourishing with a mixture of the two thoughts. Behrquist gives very detailed guided lists for each grade level and a schedule (although the schedules are a bit more vague as far as time allocated to each subject). I like that she focuses SO much on Catholicism and American history in the early years. I liked it so well that I gave it to a friend who is thinking of homeschool so that she could "see" what a typical day might look like.

Catholic Nov 20, 2008 This book had a little to much of a Catholic taste for me. Would probably be enjoyed by those of that faith.

One of the best resources Nov 04, 2008 This is one of the best books I've read on the subject of homeschooling in the "how to" arena. Especially helpful to me have been her suggestions in phonics and reading, as I have children in that age group. She focuses on what is friendly to a large family in which you have other things you have to attend to.
She helps the parent to discern what is essential to each age level, and unlike many programs, places a heavy emphasis on the fine arts. Never have I seen in any program an earnest appeal to take care that our children learn to appreciate true beauty.
True, there is some weakness in the science area among her suggestions, but her recommendation of the methodology for teaching science is superb. It engages the mind and encourages wonder in the student. While I like her recommendations, I believe more structure in this area is important, and more challenge in high school in the science area is needed. But, having said that, this book is an excellent resource and provides lots of information for you to draw on -- and you can redistribute her recommendations around to different age levels if you wish.

Good source for home education Aug 12, 2005 I have made use of this approach. One does not have to stick to a strict structure of cirriculum to homeschool. By substitution and research you can design your home school year by year. The goal is to get our children to heaven and in so teaching the virtues and religious academia is necessary. The literary genius of yesteryear are necessary to teach the morals and virtues we want our children to hold on to. Mrs. Berquist has formulated a good outline for us to follow and use each year of teaching. Nothing is unattainable with God's help.
