The Catholic Bible Dictionary is another outstanding work of Dr. Scott Hahn. It addresses all of the questions -- and then some -- that an inquiring Bible reader would ask as they were reading the Bible. Catholic or not -- this is the serious source of answers to questions Bible scholars may have.

Scott Hahn's "Catholic Bible Dictionary" May 28, 2010
I have three gems in my little library: Josh McDowell's "The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict", Wayne Grudem's "Systematic Theology" and Scott Hahn's "Catholic Bible Dictionary". You may notice the eclectic approach...
In my quest to deepen my knowledge about my Christian faith, I realised that I needed an authoritative resource to answer questions that might arise out of my study of biblical Scripture. It is, of course, easy to conduct an internet search to obtain answers, but I needed something that, at least in my view, had authority, authenticity and integrity. When I came across Scott Hahn's "Catholic Bible", I ordered it sight unseen - simply because I have full trust in Scott Hahn's works.
Quite unashamedly I like to sing Scott Hahn's praises as a theologian of note and I quote his background, using Wikipedia as source, to emphasise his standing as a leading academic, scholar and Christian:
Hahn received his B.A. in 1979 from Grove City College in Pennsylvania with a triple major of theology, philosophy, and economics (magna cum laude). He obtained his M.Div. (summa cum laude) from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1982. In May 1995, he was awarded a Ph.D. in systematic theology from Marquette University (Phi Beta Kappa)... Hahn (also) founded and is currently the President of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, a Christian research center and think tank committed to the promotion of biblical literacy...
The Catholic Bible Dictionary is a highly readable guide with more than 5000 entries, including - to name a few - every book in the Bible, every significant person, language and imagery of the Bible, civilizations of influence at the time (Egypt, Rome, Babylon, Greece etc), maps, teachings, doctrines - the heart delights at this treasure trove for anyone interested in enriching their understanding of Sacred Scripture. I would not normally consider a dictionary bedside reading; with Scott Hahn's "Catholic Bible Dictionary" I'll make an exception!

Wonderful resource that provides instant information with the definitions. Also, I find myself reading the Dictionary as it is that interesting. We keep ours with our Bibles.

Everyone who reads the Bible should have this Dictionary Mar 24, 2010
I just received my copy of the Catholic Bible Dictionary recently. I am a 52 yr old lapsed Catholic, who has been drawn closer to my faith from readings of the Bible, Saints, Apostles, etc.. This Dictionary, regardless of your individual faith, will open those books of the Bible that have been somewhat difficult to understand at times.
Some entries are about 3 sentences long; while others have, in the most incredible detail, pages of information about Christ as the Messiah, Apostles' Letters, Psalms, and so much more than I can list. The Catholic Bible Dictionary will lenthen the time of Bible Study, but with such joy! I can now read The Bible with greater understanding, clarity, and conviction than I ever have before. I believe all who purchase this product will be amazed at the amount of information gathered, marvel at their ability to follow the maps at the rear of the book, and find that each is richer for their understanding. I also believe that each will actually read with even more joy, The Holy Bible; find themselves reading for longer periods of time without realizing the amount of time that has gone by- SIMPLY BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH MORE THAT IS ABLE TO BE UNDERSTOOD!
The Catholic Bible Dictionary is the gift among gifts to be given to all. Confirmation, Marriage, Christmas...all would be the perfect time to give the Catholic Bible Dictionary to friends, family, or neighbors. Buy one for your local Parish. To have one available in the Parish Library for all to see will turn into a reason to buy one for ones' self and others. What better gift than to open the mysteries and beauty of God's word?

For anyone who reads the Bible, both Catholic and non-Catholic, this volume is extremely valuable. One is often confronted with a word or phrase that we think we understand; but do we really? For example: "The Garden of Eden." Prof Scott Hahn looks at this Garden from every aspect - from the physical location to the symbolic meaning of this earthly "paradise" where God is present. It is one of, if not the most, complete "encyclopaedias" related to every aspect of the Scriptures. For any student of the Scriptures or anyone interested in undertsanding the Scriptures this is a MUST reference book. For Catholics, as also for non-Catholics, it is important to know that the "Nihil Obstat" and "Imprimatur" declarations by Bishops of the Church means that the volume has been scrutinised and declared to contain no element at all that is in contradiction to the teaching of the Church and hence it may be published having the backing of the Catholic Church. Scott Hanhn is an extremely good writer and has a style of writing that is easy and interesting to read. Deacon A.(Tony) de Freitas PhD.
